Outdoor dining and street trading

All businesses wanting to provide outdoor dining or street trading must obtain approval from the City of Subiaco. This page contains information on outdoor dining and guidelines and regulations for street trading.

Outdoor dining and street trading helps to promote a vibrant street life in a safe and comfortable environment for the community. Outdoor dining areas adjoin a cafe or restaurant and have tables, chairs and other structures to be used for dining purposes on a footpath or other public place.

Applying for an outdoor dining permit

Applications for an outdoor dining permit must be submitted to the city and include: 

  • an application form (PDF, 127KB)
  • details of public liability insurance (minimum of $20,000,000)
  • the proposed outdoor dining plan to scale including area measurements in metres. For your convenience, the provided graph sheet may be used
  • please include in the outdoor dining plan, the position of the tables, chairs, umbrellas, wind blocks, planter boxes and any other structure in the proposed alfresco dining area
  • colour photograph(s) of the proposed furniture and structures
  • application fee – please refer to the schedule of fees (PDF, 102KB)

If you have not held an outdoor dining permit in the last twelve months you may be eligible for a trial permit at a reduced cost. Download the trial outdoor dining information sheet (PDF, 155KB).

An outdoor dining permit is not required if the outdoor area is on private land. Please ensure you gain relevant planning approval from the city where required.

Applications for street trading

Local business owners who wish to display goods on the footpath immediately adjacent to their shop should submit:

Applications from external traders (applicants from outside the City of Subiaco) should also be submitted to the city and must include:

  • completed street trading application form (PDF, 124KB)
  • an accurate plan and description of any stall, table, stand, umbrella or any other structure that will be located in the street trading area
  • a copy of the current public liability insurance policy, noting the City of Subiaco for its rights and interests
  • payment of the relevant fees – please see our schedule of fees (PDF, 92KB)
